DIY Soothing Cica and Calendula Body Lotion

I have dry skin, and I live in a dry climate, so I go through a lot of lotion! Making it myself allows me to include beneficial ingredients for my skin at a much lower price point than buying products with similar ingredients. I include soothing ingredients, like cica, calendula, and colloidal oatmeal, as well as AHAs for chemical exfoliation to help with keratosis pilaris, and hyaluronic acid to help with hydration.

I don’t include any fragrance since that can be irritating to the skin, so the lotion has a faint scent of the actual ingredients – I can pick out the calendula and oat, but mostly it just smells fresh.

I also include a preservative and antioxident to keep the lotion fresh on my bathroom counter. (Also make sure that all of your equipment, workspace and hands are very clean. A spray bottle of rubbing alcohol can disinfect surfaces and equipment, just spray and let it dry.) I go through this amount of body lotion in about 6 weeks, but it should store for up to 6 months.

I use a scale to measure out the ingredients, so all amounts listed are in grams.

  • Servings: 750 grams (26oz)
  • Print

Ingredients

  • 90g refined shea butter
  • 37.5g cica & calendula infused apricot oil
  • 37.5g MCT oil
  • 37.5g emulsifying wax
  • 525g boiled water (or distilled)
  • 7.5g colloidal oatmeal
  • .75g hyaluronic acid powder
  • 7.5g AHAs
  • 22.5g glycerin
  • 7.5g optiphen plus (preservative)
  • 7.5g vitamin E oil (antioxident)

Directions

  1. Combine shea butter, apricot oil, MCT oil, and emusifying wax in a glass measuring cup and set in a pot of water over medium heat until fully melted.
  2. In the meantime, in a separate measuring cup, add the water, colloidal oatmeal, hyaluronic acid, AHA, and glycerin, and use an immersion blender to fully combine.
  3. Slowly pour the oil mixture into the water mixture, blending with the immersion blender to fully combine and emulsify. Continue blending as the mixture cools.
  4. Once the mixture is warm, but not hot, add the preservative and vitamin e oil and blend to combine.
  5. Pour into jars for storage. The mixture will continue to thicken as it cools.

Use the lotion within 6 months.
