DIY Cocoa Butter Hand Lotion

Since I have been making my own body lotion, I have also been making my own hand lotion. This recipe follows the same process, but has fewer ingredients, so it could be a good place to start if you are new to lotion-making. This formula absorbs well and doesn’t leave your hands feeling greasy.

Since we are using unrefined cocoa butter, the lotion smells like chocolate, and I haven’t added any additional fragrance (although you could if you’d like). It also includes a preservative and antioxident to keep the lotion fresh. (Make sure that all of your equipment, workspace and hands are very clean. A spray bottle of rubbing alcohol can disinfect surfaces and equipment, just spray and let it dry.) This hand lotion should store for up to 6 months.

I am using these wide-mouth ceramic pump bottles, which are easy to clean out and refill with a fresh batch of lotion when needed.

I use a scale to measure out the ingredients, so all amounts listed are in grams.

Cocoa Butter Hand Lotion

  • Servings: 500 grams (17oz)
  • Print

Ingredients

  • 50g unrefined cocoa butter
  • 50g MCT oil
  • 50g emulsifying wax
  • 355g boiled water (or distilled)
  • 10g glycerin
  • 5g optiphen plus (preservative)
  • 5g vitamin E oil (antioxident)

Directions

  1. Combine cocoa butter, MCT oil, and emusifying wax in a glass measuring cup and set in a pot of water over medium heat until fully melted, stirring occasionally.
  2. In the meantime, in a separate measuring cup, add the water and glycerin.
  3. Slowly pour the cocoa butter mixture into the water mixture while stirring, and then blend with the immersion blender to fully combine and emulsify. Continue blending as the mixture cools.
  4. Once the mixture is warm, but not hot, add the preservative and vitamin e oil and blend to combine.
  5. Pour into bottles for storage. The mixture will continue to thicken as it cools. Once fully cool, add the pumps to the bottles.

Use the lotion within 6 months.
